On his way to Assyria, Ahaz saw an altar in Damascus that he liked, so he had plans sent to Jerusalem. He set up his new altar in the Lord’s Temple and on it sacrificed to Syrian gods. The old altar of the Lord he moved aside. Eventally, Ahaz closed the Temple and authorized full-scale idolatry. He even burned his own sons in child sacrifice (2 Ki 16:1-20; 2 Chron 28:1-27)
